Congratulations to the St. Johns County Airport Authority and its project team for completing the rehabilitation of Taxiway B at Northeast Florida Regional Airport (SGJ) ahead of schedule by 45 days, and under budget by approximately $60,000!
Construction on Taxiway B began on January 17, 2023, and the fully re-opened taxiway was available for use on February 21, 2023. During construction, primary Runway 13/31 remained open during the day, with paving operations performed inside the runway safety area at night. The construction budget was $1.8M, and included milling and re-surfacing 35,000 square yards of pavement, removing 4,500 square yards of existing pavement, and installing a seal coat across 12,000 square yards of existing pavement.
The project also upgraded the electrical lighting and signage to LED, site restoration, and applying new FAA geometric standards at the Taxiway B2 intersection, to improve safety by removing a non-standard access to Runway 13/31. This geometric change improves the overall safety of the airfield and brings the Taxiway up to the latest FAA design standards.
Extensive coordination between the air traffic control tower, Halifax Paving, Inc. (prime contractor), H.L. Pruitt Corporation / Better Barricades, Inc. (subcontractors), Passero Associates (engineer) and numerous airport tenants was required to safely accommodate and separate the construction efforts from active airport operations.
All work was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, in accordance with the plans and specifications. Congratulations to Brad Wente, Matt Singletary, Dan Passero, Angela Witt, and Harrison Korb on a job well done!
Thank you to the St. Johns County Airport Authority, for your continued support and confidence in your project team at Passero, and to the FAA and FDOT, for funding this project and for their unwavering support for airports across Florida.
