Passero Associates is pleased to announce that the recently completed SUNY Broome Community College Culinary and Events Center has been presented with the 2020 New York State Historic Preservation Award by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Passero Associates provided full architectural, engineering, and preservation design services for this landmark renovation of the former Carnegie Library, in Binghamton, New York.
The former Carnegie Library is on the registry of National Historic Places, requiring SHPO and local historic review. Passero Associates designed the building for a change of use from a library to a modern, technologically advanced Culinary Institute. Creating effective ventilation and building functions while keeping the historic character of the building required innovative design and construction methods. This building creates an important downtown presence for the College and contributes to the renaissance of downtown Binghamton.
Each year the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation recognizes excellence in the preservation and rejuvenation of New York's historic and cultural treasures. This project is an excellent example of a rehabilitation project that successfully utilized the commercial historic tax credits to transform the former Carnegie Library in downtown Binghamton into an educational and community asset.
