Description

This project altered the geometry of the existing entrance roadways to the airport. The primary improvement is construction of a roundabout to replace an intersection of the primary passenger entrance road. The intersection of Jug Handle Road and Airport Way is a typical intersection with one way traffic on the Jug Handle with Right-of-Way. Traffic on Airport Way, the primary cargo access road, is stalled waiting for an acceptable gap to cross the Jug Handle. The project replaces the intersection with a roundabout reducing delay for cargo haulers. The roundabout slows traffic on the primary passenger entrance road and reduces vehicle conflicts at Airport Way. Drivers exiting the roundabout for the terminal will experience a less stressful driving environment as they approach the trifurcation of parking, departures, and arrivals. The work also included realignment of another intersection and elimination of a terminal loop road segment. The terminal loop segment being eliminated will force terminal loop traffic through the roundabout and remove a merge area in a critical driver decision zone prior to the terminal and terminal parking.
