This project consisted of constructing the concrete I-wall resiliency protection with top of wall at +90 NAVD 88 boardwalk starting in the southeast corner of the park then heading west to the southwest corner of the park then heading north following the waterfront until stopping at Atlantic Seafood.
Recessed light fixtures are within the I-wall with turtle friendly Amber LED lights illuminating the boardwalk surface. Along the edge of the existing Timber Bulkhead the boardwalk rests on top of the bulkhead with a wood post and cable guardrail in step with historic downtown Fernandina Beach.
Additional stabilization is provided by placing open cell articulating block (hand-placed) along the existing riverbank to address the eroding shoreline including placement for an Oyster Bag Reef heading north along the River and stopping at the existing boat launch ramp dock.
Within the area that is formed by the Oyster Bag Reef are tidal plantings to fill in the bare areas of the mud flats. Tidal plantings are also placed over the existing open cell articulating blocks and up to the edge to the concrete boardwalk. All stabilization materials placed along the river are according to Nationwide Permit 54 for living shorelines.
The project was partially funded through a Grant provided by the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND). Passero Associates is also assisting with coordination for the grant.
