Description

Following the success and public popularity of the renovation and expansion of the children’s area, the Greece Public Library turned its attention to the remainder of its public spaces with a goal to expand patron services, improve sight lines, safety, and accessibility, and increase energy efficiency. With thoughtful space planning, the new layout of the library was able to accommodate lower bookshelves while still providing shelf space for future growth and expansion. Lower shelving is now preferred in libraries in contrast to the traditional tall rows of shelves, as they are not only easier to reach, but also provide clear sight lines for staff and patrons throughout the space. Visibility for staff is critical for safety in a library, so in addition to the improved sight lines, the formerly dim library was also brightened with new energy efficient LED lighting. The renovation also incorporated several new features for patrons including an enclosed quiet room, study booths, a cafe, a tween area, and a gaming center in the teen library.
