Description

Runway was exhibiting significant cracking due to the poor soil conditions beneath the asphalt and subbase structure. Some of the cracks in the asphalt measured 4” in width. Crack sealing was no longer a viable resolution. FAA required a solution that would last 15-20 years. This project included full depth asphalt reclamation along the entire (3,375’ x 75’) length of Runway 7-25 and a 5” asphalt overlay. The initial scope called for crack repair to the runway which had 25 year old pavement with full depth cracks up to 4”wide. The aggregate in the original pavement section was very good, but the native soils below the section were very susceptible to frost. The best alternative to minimize the frost impact of the proposed pavement was to combine a reclaim pavement with 5 inches of new asphalt. The entire design needed to be completed within four weeks after the solution was agreed upon. Passero Associates performed the pavement design and oversaw every aspect of the design as well as providing guidance during construction.
