SUNY Broome Calice Center Advanced Manufacturing Student Building

This rejuvenation of the Mechanical Building at Broome Community College, in conjunction with a 4,300 SF connector addition joining the Mechanical and Business buildings, is in coordination with the SUNY 2020 master plan agenda. The renovated Advanced Manufacturing Center showcases new technology with updated labs and equipment, including a state of the art clean room and a food science lab for yogurt and brewery production.

Sustainability is a theme throughout the entire facility. Unique features include the emerging infrastructure technologies sandbox, a geothermal field and a roof top solar array which supports the building’s functions. The 1960s building was transformed from a concrete black and curtain wall building into a state of the art learning lab including restroom renovations and cutting edge lighting and controls. Net zero heating and air conditioning includes rooftop solar array, geothermal, day lighting sensors, and automated controls. The finishes are designed for ease of maintenance and longevity.

The central location of the Mechanical and Business Buildings generated a unique opportunity for their shared walk to act as a main axis for student travel. The lobby addition focused on establishing a direct connection between the Mechanical and Business Buildings, while creating a central hub for students of all programs. The landscaping and new façade serve to draw interest to the newly renovated spaces and form a more inviting exterior space for staff and students to congregate.
