“Switch” 266
- Existing rail begins on the 1st Grid but eventually
bends to enter the northmost industrial building where
it conforms to the 2nd grid.
- When overlaid with
the canal, this creates
a “switch” when viewed
from above.
- Typically used to switch
a rail cars from one track
to the other (right)....here
it switches the site from
one grid to the other.
Why?
- Allows the focus of the site to be the reclaimed in-
dustrial buildings while still strongly connecting to the
existing residential area
- Direct views through the site and to the River from
the main Northern access and the existing residential
streets AND direct views through the industrial build-
ings to the river
