     SAMPSON AIR FORCE BASE

     Korean War
     -This property was used as an air force base during the
     Korean War to provide recruits with formal basic training
     -Site was rehabilitated and $5 million was invested in new
     construction
     -300,000 recruits received trained                                                     Postcard - Marching in Drill FIeld
     -At its peak the site housed 15,000 recruits, 6,000 instruc-
     tors and 1,000 civilian
     -A runway was also built in 1953 to accomodated the
     needs of the site.
     -With the end of the Korean War and subsequent cut-
     backs in military spending, basic training on this site was
     dicontinuued on 1 July 1956
